Corrosion protection can play an important role in extending the life of HVAC and heat exchange equipment, but Blygold New Zealand owner Xavier Castelltort says it is still too often overlooked during specification and commissioning.
“Across New Zealand, HVAC and heat exchange equipment is routinely exposed to coastal salt, moisture, industrial pollutants and harsh environmental conditions,” says Castelltort.
He says the consequences can include reduced system efficiency, rising maintenance costs and the premature replacement of plant and equipment.
While corrosion protection is only one consideration in protecting the performance and longevity of building assets, Castelltort says addressing it early can help prevent avoidable deterioration.
“For developers, contractors and building owners, the question is not whether corrosion will occur, but how soon,” he says.

He says the relatively small upfront cost of corrosion protection needs to be considered against the potential cost of repairing or replacing equipment later in its life.
