Product certification ‘essential’ to ensure quality, safety and sustainability
Product certification is essential in today’s market, providing assurance of quality, safety and sustainability.
“In Australia and New Zealand, recognised certification schemes help businesses meet regulatory requirements while giving consumers confidence in the products they use,” says Sam Guindi, product certification manager, Bureau Veritas New Zealand.
One widely recognised certification scheme is CodeMark, which ensures building products comply with national construction and building codes.
“This certification streamlines approvals, allowing manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with strict performance standards. It gives builders and regulators confidence that certified products are fit for purpose, helping to maintain quality, safety and efficiency in the construction industry,” says Guindi.
Another important certification scheme is the ‘S’ Mark, which focuses on product performance and compliance confirming they meet rigorous quality and safety standards. Products with this certification undergo thorough testing to ensure they function reliably and safely. In industries where product failure can have serious consequences, such certification provides an extra layer of trust for businesses and consumers alike.
“Beyond quality, safety and performance, environmental responsibility is an increasing priority. Certification programmes in the forestry and timber sector such as PEFC and FSC Chain-of-Custody help ensure materials are sourced from well-managed forests. These certifications support biodiversity, prevent deforestation, and promote responsible forestry practices. As consumer awareness grows, businesses that commit to sustainable sourcing gain a competitive advantage while contributing to environmental conservation,” adds Guindi.
With regulatory requirements becoming more stringent and market expectations evolving, Guindi says that certification is no longer just an option, it is a necessity.
“It not only helps businesses comply with industry standards but also enhances trust and credibility. In a competitive marketplace, companies that invest in certification demonstrate leadership in quality, safety, and sustainability, positioning themselves for long-term success.”
