A-frame reinvented…

Award-winning design with ZinaCore roofing

Transforming a 1970’s A-frame house into an award-winning home required a talented team and the right materials. The Habitat Design Co, led by Robbie Dick, took on this challenge in the Queenstown Lakes area, with Southern Projects’ Mark Anderson, director/quantity surveyor, and Velvin Building’s Joe Velvin, owner and director, contributing to its success. Their efforts earned the project the Supreme Renovation of the Year award in Master Builders’ 2024 House of the Year Awards.

The roof played a vital role in enhancing the home’s aesthetic appeal. The protective substrate by ColorCote, ZinaCore, was pre-painted in Ironsand, a deep brown charcoal, before being roll-formed by Dimond Roofing into the LT7 roofing and cladding profile. “When choosing a roofing product, we wanted low maintenance and aesthetically appealing cladding. ColorCote pre-painted steel roofing was the ideal solution,” says Dick.

Dimond’s LT7 profile was chosen to avoid a too-modern look, adding to the project’s distinctiveness. The colour, Ironsand, blended with the panoramic views of Queenstown Lake and surrounds, while also adding visual interest up close. This choice not only enhanced the home’s aesthetic but also ensured long-lasting durability, and colour retention.

Jasmin Pakura, marketing lead at ColorCote says that few roofing products can match ZinaCore in terms of design flexibility, durability, and low cost.

“For homeowners, ZinaCore offers the best value by combining the durability of steel with the protective qualities of aluminium and zinc. It features a special coating that resists sun and weather damage, ensuring the roof maintains its colour and shine for many years. Ideal for moderate climates, ZinaCore provides excellent protection and aesthetic appeal at an affordable price,” says Pakura.

The Habitat Design Co not only transformed a derelict A-frame into an iconic family home but highlighted the importance of choosing the right materials for longevity, keeping families sheltered from the elements for generations to come.
